Chassis for Sale

UW Formula Motorsports is currently selling two surplus chassis, from Team 18 (2007) and Team 20 (2009). The Team 18 chassis will be sold as a frame with body paneling and a full set of suspension control arms, while the Team 20 chassis will be sold as a frame and body paneling only.

The sale is being handled by the UW surplus auction system, viewable at this link:

The online auctions will end at 11:59pm December 19, with payment due December 23. Since both chassis are stored in the UW FSAE shop, they can be picked up at the buyers convenience. If you have any questions or would like to stop by the shop and take a look at the chassis, please contact Eben Kiehl at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. It’s Gonna Happen!

Construction on the Team 21 chassis has begun and is off to a great start.  Thanks to a lot of hard work and skill, this year’s chassis is over a month ahead of Team 20’s construction schedule.  This is an incredible feat and has been a great spirit booster for the team.

We are well on our way to having the chassis fully constructed before Thanksgiving!  We are aiming to have it stress relieved, sandblasted, and powder coated  in time for this year's Design Review.  This accelerated timeline and subsequent early completion of the chassis will give the team a huge moral boost for manufacturing and assembly and of course a lot more driving time in the spring before competition.  This will be the earliest completed chassis of any previous UWFSAE team while also being lighter and stiffer than any previous designs.  Team 21 is headed in a great direction and has a lot of momentum for things to come. Stay tuned....

FSAE West 2010

FSAE West 2010

Day One - Wednesday:

Today we got up bright and early to get a good paddock spot to set up. Fortunately the team got in line early and avoided most of the slow registration process. Several members were then sent to tech to secure an ideal third position in line. When it came time for tech inspection, the car was rolled in and the fun began. After spending quite a while in inspection, the judges decided that our car was race worthy and we were granted our first out of three tech stickers on our first attempt. The afternoon brought the wind, and the day ended at a warm 78 degrees.

Day Two - Thursday:

Building on the success of the previous day, we were able to get in line for fuel early, setting us for great spots in the upcomimg inspections. We passed noise and brake test early in the morning, allowing us a full afternoon of practice.

Meanwhile, the team participated in design, business presentation, and cost events. Both business presentation and cost events went well, impressing the judges. However, we did not do as well in the design preliminaries, and we did not make it to design semifinals. The entire team was disappointed at the design results, but we resolved to do even better at the dynamic events. We ended the day taking a Formula SAE event photo with all the other teams.

Day Three - Friday:

The third day started off strong with an early arrival to the paddock and fuel line. After the disappointing second day, the team regrouped and resolved to do very well in today's dynamic events. The car started off the day competing in skidpad, performing strongly and finishing 11th. The performance in the next event, acceleration, was even more impressive; the car finished the event with a time of 4.043 seconds, good enough for a second place finish and behind Oregon State's time by only 0.01 seconds. The team finished the day's dynamic events with the autocross event, placing a strong 6th. On the static event side, the team came in 3rd place for business presentation. The team ended the day checking every part of the car in anticipation for tomorrow's endurance event. With these results and all the preparations, tomorrow's endurance looks to be very promising.

Day Four - Saturday:

Today started as an awesome day that just kept getting better! We got into Endurance grid with a very well prepared and thoroughly checked and fueled car. We competed in the first run group of the day with the fastest cars at Formula SAE West 2010.
Teams in our run group were:
-Missouri S&T - DNF
-South Dakota School of Mines - DNF
-Oregon State University - DNF
-University of Illiinios - DNF
-Rochester Institute of Technology - 1st
We completed endurance with a 5th place finish, but most importantly brought it home safely!
We spent the remainder of the day waiting for the award ceremony and the excitement knowing we had done extremely well this week.  The final results for car #47 at
Formula SAE West 2010 are:
3rd Place Overall - Big trophy :)
2nd in Dynamic Events - Plaque :)
2nd in Acceleration
11th in Skidpad
6th in Autocross
5th in Endurance
7th in Fuel Economy
7th in Design
3rd in Presentation
30th in Cost
Look for pictures as they come in on our facebook page.

FSAE California Day 4 -- Endurance

After a long evening of hard work for the UW FSAE team replacing the engine and sprocket on their 2009 competition car, the team was prepared for endurance early in the morning.

In the endurance event, the car performed extremely well, passing many other top contenders on course. Unfortunately, during the second half of the event, after the driver change, the car experienced a drivetrain failure that forced the car to retire from the event.

Even with a DNF in the endurance event, the team placed 17th overall and showed the true power of the 2009 UW car.

FSAE California Day 3 -- Skidpad, Acceleration, Autocross

In a day of mixed successes, the UW FSAE team competed in three dynamic events on Friday, placing very consistently in all of the categories. The success, however, was met with many difficulties. After discovering a failed sprocket center, the team was able to get the car out well in time for autocross. In the final single lap run of autocross, the transmission bound up. This forced the team to quickly complete a full engine-swap in less than three hours in order to prepare for endurance tomorrow.

The results from the day are as follows:

5th place Autocross

8th place Skidpad

22nd place Acceleration

4th in Design

FSAE California Day 2 -- Presentation Events, Finish Tech Inspection

After a successful first day, the UW FSAE team stunned the competition by finishing all technical inspection events before the design presentation, well ahead of all other teams. After filling the fuel tank with competition fuel, the team headed to the tilt test, where the car's center of gravity was put to the test. After this the car quickly passed through the noise and brake tests without a problem.

In the design tent, the team did very well explaining the most important design aspects of the 2009 car. By the end of the day, the team moved on to design semi-finals, where the judges asked much more detailed questions regarding the specifics of the 2009 car design. The tech leads fielded the questions very well.

In the business presentation, Ryan Trickett and Jeff Dickson presented the "What can purple do for you?" campaign, proving that the 2009 UW FSAE car would be a marketable and profitable business venture. The judges were thrilled with the concept, and only offered up a few questions.

During the later afternoon, the team headed to the cost presentation, where members described cost-cutting scenarios and explained the overall cost justification for the car. Although the event was vastly different from that at the Michigan competition, the team was able to answer the judges questions with ease, and received very high marks in the overall professionalism and organization of the cost report.

In between the four presentation events throughout the day the team was able to take the car to the testing track multiple times, performing a quick shake-down of all the components, and giving the drivers a chance to get settled in.

Tomorrow, the team will be competing in the acceleration, skid-pad, and autocross events. With the continued hard work of all of the team members, the team hopes to add to the successes of today!

FSAE California Day 1 -- Tech Inspection, Weigh In

Today, after setting up our paddock space and trailer, the team was first in line for the technical inspection. This is where the judges check over the entire car to make sure all rules and regulations are met. The team passed, making only a few small changes to the car. After the technical inspection, the car went on to be weighed in. At the scales, the car weighed only 477 pounds, down from 492 at the Michigan competition. After a quick captain's meeting, the team packed up for the day, ready to advance on to the tilt, brake, and noise tests tomorrow, after which the car will be fully certified to compete in the dynamic events at the competition. Additionally, the team will be competing in the design, cost, and business presentation categories tomorrow. 2009 Unveiling Writeup

emmertpic

On Wednesday, April 8th, the Team 20 UW Formula SAE car was unveiled, with UW President Mark Emmert on hand for the presentation, remarking "I happen to like almost anything that’s purple and gold, but if it’s purple and gold and goes really fast, I like it a lot.”

The Daily, UW's student newspaper, featured a front-page article about the UW FSAE team and the unveiling. "....this project undertaken by the UW Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) doesn’t involve fixing a broken appliance or painting a room. The group’s project involves flying around a racetrack at more than 100 mph, competing against racing teams from all over the world and engineering a vehicle that can corner faster than Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Porsches."
